Introduction
Students who graduate from Ó£ÌÒÊÓÆµ and intend to practice law in the United States need to be admitted to a state bar. Each state has different requirements including but not limited to a bar exam, and character and fitness application. Please see below for the current requirements for admittance to the New York Bar.
NOTE: If you are a Brooklyn Law student/alum who would like to practice law in a jurisdiction outside of New York, please contact the Ó£ÌÒÊÓÆµ Success Department (academicsuccess@brooklaw.edu) to schedule a meeting to discuss the requirements.
REQUIREMENT 1: BAR EXAM
Upon graduating from Ó£ÌÒÊÓÆµ, graduates must register for the bar exam in order to be admitted to practice law in New York.
For candidates taking the bar exam in New York BEFORE the July 2028 bar exam, you will take the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE).
The UBE is a two-day exam and consists of the following components:
- (Standalone multiple-choice questions)
- (Short essay questions)
- (Long essay/document-based questions)

For those taking the bar exam in New York DURING or AFTER the July 2028 bar exam, you will take the NexGen Bar Exam (NextGen Exam).
The NextGen Exam is a day and a half exam and consists of the following components:
- Standalone multiple-choice questions
- Integrated Question Sets (Short answers, medium essays, and multiple-choice questions/document-based questions)
- Performance Tasks (Long essay/document-based questions)

REQUIREMENT 2: MULTISTATE PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITY EXAM (MPRE)
The MPRE is a 60-question multiple-choice ethics examination administered three times each year. A passing score in New York is 85.

REQUIREMENT 3: THE NEW YORK LAW COURSE (NYLC) AND NEW YORK LAW EXAM (NYLE)
The NYLC is an online, on-demand course on important and unique aspects of New York law. The NYLC consists of approximately 17 hours of videotaped lectures with embedded questions which must be answered correctly before an applicant can continue viewing the lecture.
Candidates must complete the NYLC a month before registering for the NYLE. It can be taken within one year of taking and passing the Uniform Bar Exam. The NYLE is an open-book test developed by the Board of Law Examiners containing 50 multiple-choice questions. It is offered three times per year. A passing score is 30/50 correctly answered questions.

REQUIREMENT 4: 50-HOUR PRO BONO REQUIREMENT
All candidates seeking admission to the New York Bar will need to file documentation showing that they have completed 50 hours of qualifying pro bono work, as required by
Students who complete in-house clinics and certain internships/externships may count hours worked in these settings towards the 50-hour pro bono requirement.

REQUIREMENT 5: SKILLS REQUIREMENT
All candidates seeking admission to the New York Bar must establish that they have acquired skills and professional values necessary to competently practice law. Students who earn a law degree from Ó£ÌÒÊÓÆµ meet this requirement due to the required coursework.
REQUIREMENT 6: CHARACTER AND FITNESS APPLICATION
All candidates seeking admission to the New York Bar must submit the character and fitness application upon passing the UBE/NextGen Exam, NYLE, and MPRE. This application should demonstrate that you possess the personal qualities required to practice law. It includes: General Instructions, the Application Questionnaire, Form Affirmation as to Moral Character, Form Affirmation as to Legal Employment, Form Affidavit for 50-hour Pro Bono Requirement, Skills Form Affidavit and Form Law School Certificate.
After a candidate takes and passes the UBE/NextGen Exam, NYLE and MPRE, candidates will be certified to one of the four departments of the Supreme Court Appellate Division based on the applicant’s address.
