Following law school, Professor Smith served as Appellate Counsel and, later, Bureau Chief of the Appeals Bureau at the Legal Aid Society of Suffolk County, where he briefed and argued many matters before New York's intermediate appellate courts and the New York Court of Appeals.  He also served a law clerk, first with the Staff Attorney’s Office at the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and, later, to the Honorable Jenny Rivera at the New York Court of Appeals—New York’s highest Court.
